“You look lost,” she said to them.

The priest looked first at her greasy blue stockings, then up at her tangled hair, and finally at her face. She had the look of a wary mastiff. She also had a moustache that might have better suited a thirteen-year-old boy.

The story begins during the black death in France, in the aftermath of Crécy (so a few years after 1346), Thomas, a fallen, turned-brigand knight bonds with newly orphaned Delphine, a prepubescent girl and possible saint. The narrative feels like it was stitched together from several short stories of medieval violence such that it reminds me of both the Arya/Hound GOT plot as well as many plots of the Witcher (and Thomas would look more like Geralt than the Hound). The story morphs into a medieval apocalypse with Thomas and Delphine encountering demons and devils while keeping faith in an apparently absent God. It’s damned entertaining.
